Jack’s Maytag Home Appliance Center: Tips to refrigerator maintenance

Unlike most appliances, there’s something about it that can be pretty daunting. It’s not as easy to understand and take care of unlike stoves or ovens. There are also a few things to remember about your refrigerator to keep it working properly.

Something that you won’t usually find in other household appliances. Let Jack’s Maytag Home Appliance Center shed some light on how to take care of your refrigerator.

Check the door seals

The main function of the refrigerator is to keep your food and drinks cold and preserved. It doesn’t really do its job if cold air is leaking out through the doors. This is why it’s best to check the rubber seal and clean it at least twice a year with water and baking soda.

To make sure the seal is working properly, have a money bill closed in the door so that half of it is inside. If it slips out easily, then you might need to have professionals look into replacing your rubber seal.

Set the right temperature

Keeping your refrigerator at the ideal temperature of 37-40 degrees Fahrenheit will keep the internal temperature consistent. This helps with preserving your food better and longer. The consistent cold temperature helps slow down the growth of bacteria in food.

This keeps it safe and helps avoid food poisoning when food temperature rises above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. You can use a free-standing thermometer to make sure it’s consistent. Also, make sure that your freezer is consistently at 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

Keep the coils clean

Condenser coils are what’s keeping the heat from the inside of your refrigerator. It will also become the dirtiest part of your refrigerator and will cause it to run inefficiently if not cleaned. Unplug the refrigerator and move it away from the wall.

From the back, brush off any dust or dirt accumulated on the coils and fan. You can also use a vacuum to thoroughly clean them. Ideally, its best to clean the coils and fan twice a year to keep your appliance running smoothly.

Clean the inside

It also helps to clean the inside and remove any spillage on the surface. If you spill or forget to close the door and we don’t clean up, it might cause a bad odour to accumulate inside. It’s also possible to have bacteria accumulate inside if it’s not cleaned.

Defrosting your refrigerator will also help remove thick ice that accumulates in your freezer that might affect its freezing effect. Once cleaned, you can also use some refrigerator deodorizer to keep the smell clean and fresh.

Keep it full

While some people might think that it’s better to have an almost empty refrigerator to keep things cooler, it will actually reduce its efficiency.

With more space inside, it gives more room for warm air to rush in when opened. If you eat out a lot and don’t have leftovers to keep, you can fill it up with water jugs or drinks to add mass and maintain low temperatures.
